PHISH

At Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California

October 6 & 7, 2000

Phish with Bob WeirTamara's Concert Review: Imagine... it's early October in Northern California. The air is crisp (around 50 degrees) and Phish is tearing it up on the stage down below. We spent Friday and Saturday night at Shoreline Amphitheater, which is the same place we saw the Grateful Dead perform back in 1993 (over 3,000 miles away in California!). Shoshana and her boyfriend Brian stood and danced with us while our friend Andy and his girlfriend Rosa met us and various tour friends during set breaks. The band was incredible (as usual) and put on two tremendous concerts. The light show was really good, too, delivering a rainbow of effects that were perfectly timed to the music. Staying true to their style, Phish played several long, hot jams. I danced most of the time, but often had to relax my ankle which had become sore. At times, I closed my eyes and let the music and cool air wash over me, making sure to open them quickly so that I could catch more glimpses of the band. Trey and Mike were always smiling and it made me happy. The opening song on the first night (Carini) was particularly groovy, and I remember turning to Shoshana several times during it's performance to say how cool it was. While both nights seemed like one long jam (blur!), standout performances included "Run Like an Antelope", "Meatstick", "Bathtub Gin" and "Fee."

My only real complaint belongs to the Shoreline staff. It took hours to get through traffic and to find parking, at least an hour to negotiate long lines to enter the venue, and 1-2 hours for the parking lots to start moving at the end of each night. It seemed like a little planning on their part could have prevented this, and it put a damper on our experience; however, the band was so great that it was hard to stay angry for long.
