Yes
October 21, 1999
They
played at the Sunrise Musical theater-- a venue we like a lot. Eric, Ari
and I arrived at this Thursday night show a little late, partly due to
the heavy rain, and partly because we were trying to have some dinner
before we left. As we entered the building, sounds of Yes reverberated
from the theater inside. We weren't sure how long they had been playing,
but after purchasing some refreshments, we quickly made our way up to
the second level. The usher had to move three people out of our seats,
but once we were settled in, we started to enjoy the show. They opened
with a lot of new material from their latest album. These bouncy, uplifting
songs sounded nice enough to buy the CD, although we found many of the
licks borrowed from previous years. At times, the instruments and vocals
became brassy and loud, causing an uncomfortable pressure in our heads.
The microphone (or was it John Anderson's high pitched voice?) even squealed
on occassion, adding to our discomfort. About midway through the show,
they began to play some of their classic material, which we enjoyed very
much. Well known favorites included Roundabout, Two Hearts, I've Seen
all Good People and Owner of a Lonely Heart. Behind the stage, they displayed
colorful pinwheels of light and interesting animations, which added a
nice effect. For the most part (except for when it got loud), we found
the show relaxing. Most everyone remained seated the whole time. Eric,
Ari and I enjoyed finally getting to see the band we each fell in love
with 15-25 years ago. They've been together for 30.
