Rebekah 0 - 3 months

4/19/04 - First Two Weeks. Rebekah is now two weeks old, and this is the first chance I've had to start working on her journal. So, here is a summary of the last two weeks, including her first photos:

4/28/04 - Rebekah does not like to be cold. This includes skin exposure that occurs with diaper changes, baths and summer clothes. She's happiest in long pajamas, snuggled under a blanket, held upright, with vibration against her back (like in her bouncy chair). She needs to be burped often during feedings.

5/2/04 - ONE MONTH OLD. Rebekah is doing great! She has excellent head control, very few jerky movements, and has just started to smile.

Leaving the hospital: We were delayed leaving the hospital because Rebekah's billirubin was on the high side (about a 12 when 10 is normal). We had to wait two hours for our pediatrician's office to reopen from lunch, and then we were released and advised to treat her with indirect sunlight for a few days.

Two-day follow-up: We took Rebekah to the pediatrician two days after leaving the hospital as instructed. They noted that her billirubin was up to 16, which is high, but nothing to get nervous about. We were told to continue the indirect sunlight and nursing, and to come back in three days for a recheck. The rest of the exam went well. Rebekah measured 20.25 inches long and was 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Her head circumference was 34 cm.

Three-day's later: We took Rebekah in for her billirubin recheck. Her reading had dropped down to 11, which we were told is excellent. There would be no need to recheck. Her skin is now a healthy pink instead of yellow.

Over the weekend: I became concerned when Rebekah's eyes started to stick shut with a greenish yellow crust. I called the pediatrician and was told her tear ducts are likely clogged, and I should just rub them daily with a warm, moist cotton ball. Rebekah also threw up twice after feeding, which made me nervous. I was told to keep her upright and to make sure she burps well. This seems to have solved the problem and she hasn't thrown up since.

Two-week check-up: Rebekah is now 8 pounds, 7 ounces and 21.5 inches long. Her head circumference is 14 inches. I was told that this is excellent growth! Her belly button scab still has not fallen off, and I was advised to treat it more often with rubbing alcohol. She got her first vaccination today and screamed with displeasure for 5-10 minutes! Her next check-up and shots will be at two months old. So far, Rebekah has been a good-natured, easy child. She rarely fusses or cries, and sleeps for several hours at a time.

4/24/04 - Three weeks old. I've noticed that Rebekah is now focusing on (or caring about?) moving objects, like the flashing star lights on her bouncy chair and the movements of her crib mobile. She continues to be a generally happy baby, but she complains hard when she's hungry or when a burp can't come out. She also hates the hiccups, which she gets often.

5/8/04 - Rebekah is five weeks old.

6/1/04 - Rebekah is eight weeks old, and she's plumped up quite a bit! She no longer complains about getting her diaper changed or taking a bath, and has taken to smiling often. She's alert and interested in everything around her. While she will take a pacifier from time to time, what she really likes is her thumb. She's discovered it recently and we've caught her soothing herself with it a few times.

6/7/04 - I took Rebekah in for her 2-month check-up and shots today. She weighs 13 pounds, 2 ounces (95th percentile for kids her age), is 24 inches long (100th percentile), and her head circumference is 15 1/2 inches (unknown percentile). I was concerned about a flat spot on the back of her head and the doctor confirmed that he'd like to keep an eye on it. He suggests lots of tummy time during the day. I was also worried that her eyes are still drippy and gooey sometimes. He prescribed an antibiotic ointment to apply three times a day for a week. We'll see if that does the trick. At the conclusion of her appointment, she got four shots. Yeowch! She didn't like that. Our next "well visit" will be in two months.

6/16/04 - Rebekah has her first cold. Big sister Leah and mom got it first, probably from our visit to the gymnasium last week. Now, Rebekah sounds stuffy and is coughing along with us. Weh. At least Rebekah doesn't mind taking the infant's cold medicine. It really does help. Too bad Leah won't go near it.
