Rebekah Turns One!

4/4/05 - Happy first birthday, Rebekah! We had a lovely, small birthday party at the house yesterday, which we all enjoyed very much. During the party, Rebekah took three steps, which we will officially count as walking! Congratulations Rebekah. Her actual birthday is tomorrow on April 5th. We'll take her in for her one-year check-up shortly, and post an update on her height, weight, and other statistics. Check out her birthday party album.

Rebekah turns one!

4/18/05 - We waited until now to take Rebekah in for her 12-month checkup because she's had a runny nose since her birthday. Over the weekend, it turned thick and green, which is a classic sign of infection. The night before, she was up until 1:30 AM crying. So, although we had planned a Monday morning well-visit, it quickly became a sick visit. She weighed in at 21 pounds, 2 ounces and was 30.5 inches long. The doctor said she was in the 95th percentile for height (good growth!) with little change in weight (which is fine). Since I was so concerned about the infection and other questions, I didn't write down her percentile for weight or her head circumference, but will try to get that next week. The doctor liked that Rebekah now walks across entire rooms (so do we), wondered if she knew any words besides "mama" (nope), noted her eight teeth (four on top and four on bottom) and decided to hold off on vaccines until next week. Instead, she got a prescription for ten days of antibiotics.

Rebekah One Year Old4/27/05 - I took Rebekah in for her follow-up doctor's visit today. It was raining, so I didn't bring in the stroller, but I wish I had because Rebekah was walking all over the place and hard to reel in. It took a long time to be seen and to get through our appointment. Rebekah was cranky and started crying once they got started. They weighed and measured her again (30 inches, 21 pounds/10 ounces, head 45 cm), then did a finger prick blood test to check her iron. She cried with vengeance for at least twenty minutes, during which time the doctor came in to look her over. She was all better from the infection; but he was concerned about her low iron level. Her last few iron tests in previous months were low, too, but i figured it was because she was sick each of those times. I was told to put her on iron drops for six weeks and then retest. We will also try iron fortified foods. This is in addition to the higher fiber diet we were advised to begin with her. After the doctor left the room, we were faced with at least another 15 minute wait, during which time Rebekah finally stopped crying and fell asleep in my arms. It was about five minutes later that the nurse arrived to deliver three jabs into her legs for her vaccinations. That was so uncool.

Rebekah at 14 months

5/18/05 - Rebekah is 15.5 months old now. Today, she went in for her 15-month check-up. She's doing great! Her recent ear infection has cleared considerably and she'll finish the antibiotics this week. She weighed 24 pounds (50th percentile), was 30.75 inches long (50-75th percentile), and had a head circumference of 18.5 inches/47 cm (75-90th percentile). Her iron was tested again, and this time it was two points higher (11.9 on a scale of 11-13), which the doctor said was fantastic! He noticed six teeth coming in at once and was surprised when I said she hadn't been fussy about it. Her growth and development is all normal for her age, except that she's not saying words yet. Some other babies say 4-6 words by now. I told the doctor that Rebekah communicates well through actions and understands our words. She also says, "mama." He thought this was excellent and not to worry about the words yet. Rebekah is a sweet child who loves coloring, music, dancing and swimming. She's also a blanket-lover and has claimed a few favorites. She is terrified of fireworks. Rebekah adores her big sister and they get along great so far!

Rebekah 16 months8/3/05 - Rebekah is 16 months old. Lately, she has become a screamer, squealing with delight at whatever REALLY pleases her. She's also a climber, taking to chairs and stairs whenever we're not looking. She continues to put everything in her mouth and we'll be glad when she's past this stage. She's not speaking yet, but she babbles on with enthusiasm. She rarely cries unless she's not feeling well, and has plenty of smiles and hugs to go around. She loves crayons. Thankfully, she doesn't draw on the furniture as much and understands that we must draw on paper. We're not sure which hand she favors yet; she usually has a crayon in each one. Her favorite song is "head, shoulders, knees and toes." She emphatically does the movements! She loves flipping through books on her own and having them read to her.
