I was very interested in all the Ronkin (Rankin) information. I lived in Moscow, Russia for many years and found it interesting that numerous Russian people told me that my name was a Jewish Russian name from the Smolensk region. When I saw this history on the Internet I was very intrigued and thought that i would corespond.

Elizabeth Polhemus Ronkin

Elizabeth (Liz) Polhemus Ronkin, 83, died July 11 at the Washington Home and Hospice following a bout with pneumonia. She lived in Washington, DC the last 36 years of her life.

At a time when her pioneering family still had a working farm in Elk Grove, California, she was born and raised in Sacramento. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1943 with a degree in zoology and went on to graduate studies. She was an adventurer who flew to Europe in a four-engine propeller plane in days before commercial air travel was safe and commonplace.

In 1949, she married biologist Raphael R. (Rafe) Ronkin and moved to Newark, Delaware, where she designed her family's home and became active in Democratic and civic affairs. The family briefly lived in Copenhagen, and, from 1967-1969, in New Delhi, India. Afterward, she settled in Washington, DC, where her husband continued to pursue his second career with the National Science Foundation.

In Washington, DC, she compiled a history of the National Zoological Park. She became an accomplished harpsichordist, who also enjoyed reading, traveling, cooking, crafting needlepoint of her own design, and gardening. She volunteered for 14 years with Super 60s, a seniors' group affiliated with Iona Senior Services and St. Alban's Parish. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Chevy Chase House.

Survivors include two children, Margaret (Maggie) of Washington, DC, and George of Sunnyvale, California. Interment will be with her husband, who died in 2000, in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery.

Subject: Another Ronkin

As sort of the family historian, I have kept records on the Ronkin archives and have met with Ronkins in the US and Israel. Most of the Ronkins in the US are directly related and some distantly related. The Ronkin's in Israel also have a book published of their branch. According to Bentzion Ronkin, the family head(died a few yrs. ago at the age of 92). The Ronkin's original name was Cohen and was changed in 1807 in Bubroisk, White Russia. There is also a french branch named Ronkin who never left France. However they were directly related to the Russian Ronkin's. Perhaps they went with Napoleon or after the French Revolution. If you are interested in more of this history please write. I would also like some info. on your branch. My cousin Alan and brother Ted have signed in your guest book already. Charles F. Ronkin. We have Relatives all over the US now in our mobile society. Also intermarriage is complicating the search. Of course there are lots of Ronkins on the maternal side as well, difficult to find with no Ronkin names.513-793-3745

Subject: Ronkin Family Tree/We're Related

I just finished looking up Rafe Ronkin's family tree. Eric's father was/is George/Janet from Fla. who had the education franchise. His great granfather was Israel Iisadore 1883 and his great great grandfather was Froyim, a brother to Sholem Ronkin our great grandfather. We are directly related to Eric and Rafe. Rafe's father was Noah Ronkin, brother to Isadore. As you can see Sholem had another brother named Isadore. I suspect that Eric's great grandfather was named after his uncle Israel. Alan has it partially right.Of course George(Gedalya) is a key name in our branch as Gedalya was Great Great Grandfather to us and tripple great grandfather to Eric.

Subject: Family Tree Hope you understand the Ronkin Family Tree.

Our great granfather Rabbi Sholem Ronkin had 10 brothers and 4 sisters. We only can trace about five of the brothers and two of the sisters. Since the Ronkin's were originally Cohens until 1807, lots of intermarriage among the Cohen and Ronkin clans give us a better understanding of the family tree. We have been able to trace all the Ronkins in the US. I'm not sure about Dimitrii. I don't have a scanner to send you a detailed history over the net, but if you are interested, send me your address and I'll mail you some family stuff. My father knew a George Ronkin in New York in the early 60's. My father Sidney died in 1963 so part of that family lost touch. I believe his son was a translater at the UN. Perhaps you know of them.

Please visit www.ronkin.com and touch the idea of Ronkin world wide... >From time to time it is smelling H2SO4 around (especially last night).... and dead fishes in Dunav river and dead birds on earth in Bulgaria hm from time to time dead "NightHawk (or something like that ) in Serbia , actually not too bad. Water for drink from deep wheels and packed into plastic botles - not from taps. NATO strikes push Bolkans to eco-haos. Actually the most active are those who far away from here - USA and (still) Great Britan, is it strange? Still Alives Family PS You really think of it as combat zone...refugees hiding not from Serbs troops - they are hiding from NATO bombing and UCK (former terrorist organisation) treatment. By the way CNN broadcasts very weak about NATO strikes on refugees or civil objects. See EuroNews more corrects...NO coments.

Subject: Ancient family records

Dear Tamara, Some time ago, I wrote to you because my family name (2 generations ago) was also Ronkin. I told you that my wife and I were going to Southern France during the summer. The area we were in, Provence, was very friendly to Jews in the middle ages during the time of the French Popes. The synagogue in Avignon was closed when we tried to visit it. However, the one in Carpentras was open and we toured it with a French-speaking tour guide, a member of the synagogue. After the tour, we asked about old records, and she responded that there were many of them in the basement, but she was unable to help any more. We were told that the synagogue at Carpentras was the oldest synagogue in France. I contacted the town hall of Carpentras (marie@ville-carpentras.fr) and asked about the old records. A Mr. Eric Kintzig (e.kintzig@ville-carpentras.fr) responded to my e-mail. Apparently, the synagogue is not "on line," but he gave me this mailing address: Association Culturelle Israélite Synagogue Place Maurice Charretier 84200 CARPENTRAS Tel: 04 90 63 39 97 I am not knowleteble about how to search records. I assume that these records are probably written in Ladino, but the extent and completeness of them is beyond me. Perhaps someone more qualified could research some of the old records to see if we were there. Sincerely, Herbert L. Renkin Herbert L. I figured that _ veryone kept asking me if it was my business and I kept saying you were my cousin. Tried to contact you by letter a couple of times but never got answered. The Ronkin's have a great and interesting history even after Babreysk was amde into a military base. My Cousin Grisha can tell you the history of the "city" at one time it was populated with approx 100,00 people and about 1/3 were Ronkins We are all related and all decended from a woman in france by the name of Rona. ( Ask Chuck he has the written history). In French the name was Ronnin ( descended from Rona and in Russion its Ronkin ( also means descended from Rona) somehow the British changed it to Rankin and they subsequently got "lost". We are all Kohannim, and there is even a genetic link to prove it. Chuck has managed to trace the genetic coding back throughSpain and Africa to Yemen and he has discovered that in spite of our oral history and its connection to Aaron, we can prove origin in Yemen then trace a migration through various countries - Chuck has actually met family (provable) in various countries. Including some type of a connection to the Rothchilds, We also have a Coat of Arms from 12th century France ( if you can believe it). Additionally we were listed amongst the " Popes Jews of Avignon" historically. So 'cousin I'm very pleased to have made another connection and I hope you are as well -- we have quite an extensive family in NY, NJ and elsewhere am delighted to share info. Dmitrii and Alexandrina are relatively new discoveries. Unfortunately Alexandrina is situated 87 miles from Belgrade and is very concerned about her famiy in that city While I hope to meet them soon I'm certain they'd be delighted to hear from you.

However, a student from Boston will need help with her applications for a physical therapy masters and must take the GRE. Thus, I will try working with her through the internet. It should be interesting.
